Course Content:
– The course deals with laws of operation in international community. It starts out from historical experiences of European diplomacy and foreign policy, analyzing foreign policy orientations and diplomatic achievements of countries with Slovenian population or minorities.
– Theories of nations and states.
– Substantial issue of international relations is issue of war and peace. War is a military, peace a diplomatic issue.
– Competition of church and state institutions, the Thirty Year’s War and the peace of Westphalia (1618-1648).
– The course will concentrate on the time from the end of 18th to the beginning of 21st century, a period slightly longer than 200 years. The first part deals with the period from French revolution (1789) to October revolution (1917). The second part discusses the time between WW I and fall of the Berlin Wall.
– Here, several theoretical and philosophical questions concerning policies of the 20th century (Bobbitt), predictions about the end of history (Fukuyama) and clash of civilizations (Huntington) are discussed.
– Peace conferences, international treaties (Vienna Congress, Versailles, Paris, Helsinki, Brioni, The Hague…).
– Course and meaning of Cold War: Iron Curtain, Trieste issue, Yugoslav crisis, Slovenian independence.
– European Union and NATO.
– Slovenian-Croatian relations.
