Course Content:
– What is security? Whose security? What is a security issue? How can we achieve security?
– Institutions, alliances, the United Nations Organizations, NATO, the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, etc.
– Examination of contemporary security challenges: enforced diplomacy, fight against terrorism, the role of intelligence-security services, private security, weapons of mass destruction, trade in arms, use of armed forces, international operations and missions, etc.
– Regional security issues, the importance of geopolitics, political and military geography, etc.
– Human rights and fundamental freedoms, and contemporary security challenges.
– In-depth examination of theories of security studies: realism, liberalism, the game theory, constructivism, peace studies, classical theories, feminist perspectives, international political sociology. The examination is focused on state and non-state players, and military and non-military players. Special attention is given to non-traditional literature, such as the Third World Security School, the Paris School, the Welsh School, etc.
